Ai Weiwei’s “Bang”, an explosion of 886 antique wooden stools from floor to ceiling, featured as part of the German switcheroo with the French Pavillion at the Venice Biennale 2013. The topic of “room” made me think of Ai Weiwei, as the Chinese artist manages to maintain a clear voice and creative expression despite the constraints of Chinese Communist Party surveillance and disapproval. Whereas many Western artists have little left to revolt against, Ai Weiwei has been locked up for his dissident activities yet has established an impressive body of work charged with insightful comments on consumerism, bureaucracy and oppression. While having room to experiment, develop and explore is a privilege, sometimes constraints force you to be far more creative and clever.
