The lovers on London Bridge.
I wasn’t looking at them. I was looking at the fiery sky, and wondering whether I could get across London Bridge safely, to get a better view of the red streak and the dome of St Paul’s. I took a load of photos. I didn’t see the lovers until later, when I was going through my collection. They are kissing in two pictures, and have separated and walked out of shot in a few more frames. I wish I knew who they were, and I would pass a copy on.
If you are lucky, there are a smattering of moments like the one this couple experienced in your life. The city laid out before you, a sunset, someone special in your arms to share the happy coincidence of light, living, love. We are trying, more and more, to pin these moments down, in selfies and status updates. This risks destroying the fleeting magic. The drive to record can take us out of being, and instead thinking how it will look. How to make it look better.
In this picture, I have a souvenir of a magical feeling, obtained accidentally, without disturbing the way events unfolded. I’m not in the picture, and yet I feel I am there more than anyone else.
