Location: Varanasi, India. November 2012.
The Ganga Aarti ceremony in Varanasi is held every evening at sun down. Hundreds of people – devotees from all over India and curious tourists from around the world – crowd the steps down to the River Ganges to experience the river worship rituals.
Creating a very welcoming atmosphere, students of the Vedas and Upanishads perform the ceremony, using incense, burning lamps and flowers. Many of the Indian worshippers had shaved heads – which is part of the cleansing rituals that take place before a visit to Varanasi, one of India’s holiest cities.
The bright colours and movement means it is a wonderful event to attend and photograph.
Grouping photos in threes to tell a story is a fantastic technique that I will use as a touchstone in future. See more of this challenge here.
